The Pink Board
Riviera Paddlesurf has been a presenting sponsor of SUFTC since it’s inaugural event 4 years ago. From the beginning we saw SUP as an opportunity to bring people together in support of causes that touch all our lives one of them being breast cancer.
We are proud to offer our 10'6 SUFTC model in Pink to raise funds and awareness to help Komen continue their mission of providing mammograms for women who can’t other wise afford them thereby saving lives.
To date through pink board sales alone we have raised $ $21,176 and we hope to raise more as SUFTC adds many more events throughout the US this year.
Following is a story that just happened last month.
It’s because of stories like this one and others that make us even more enthusiastic about are partnership with Stand Up for the Cure and helping women like Amie:
On a Thursday some weeks back we got a call from Amie’s friend Erinn looking for a Stand Up for the Cure pink board. We explained that we were out of them but had a pink plaid board and would that work as a replacement. Erinn then explained her friend’s medical situation and that she really had a desire to have a STFTC pink board. So we took another look and found one a prototype of next years model left in our showroom. Erinn was so happy and told us she would like Drew Brophy to paint a message on her board. We contacted Drew and he was happy to do it, he picked the board up on Friday and delived it back to us on Sunday painted and ready to deliver. Monday came and our driver Joey was told to deliver the board to a woman named Amie down to San Diego. When Joey arrived with the board but no one was home so he hung out for a bit then noticed a woman walking down the street, he asked if her name was Amie she said yes and then Joey told her that he had a delivery for her. He proceeded to pull out the board that she had no idea she was getting. Attached to the board was a letter from her good friend Erinn explaining every thing. She read the letter to Joey and they both teared up. You see Joey’s girl friend is going through her own struggle with Melanoma Cancer so he was equally touched by Erinn’s love and generosity for a sick friend.
It is stories like this that touch us all and makes all that we do worth every minute we put into this cause.

How are the Funds Raised used in the Fight Against Breast Cancer? A message from Judie Vivian, Volunteer OrganizerStandup for the Cure forwards 100% of the donations and proceeds from the event to the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure. The event is run by volunteers and 'Gift in Kind' donations. As noted on Komen OC's web site, 25% of all funds received go towards Breast Cancer research and Komen is the largest supporter of research in the USA . The remaining 75% is for Breast Health Services for local women. The Komen Grant process: RFP's are submitted by local clinics to Komen OC for grants to be able to offer breast health services to under-insured or uninsured women. These grant applications are carefully reviewed by the Komen OC Grant Review Committee and if approved and granted, their performance is carefully monitored all year to ensure proper use of those funds per their RFP commitments. The Grant are awarded each December and you are most welcome to attend the breakfast to meet each of the grantees and hear first hand about their programs. Last year Komen OC granted over $1 million to local clinics! On average, a donation of $125 covers the cost of a mammogram, but there are also many other ways Komen OC helps women undergoing treatment such as helping them with hats, wigs and scarves while undergoing chemotherapy, outreach education programs to encourage early detection and support groups. As a breast cancer survivor myself, I feel that this is the most effective use of our funds raised and am committed to the fight against breast cancer for all of us, since 1 in 8 are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime while only 1 in 5 have health insurance in Orange County. I have served on Komen OC's Grant Review Committee and now serve on their Board of Directors so that I can be absolutely sure of how and where our donation funds are spent. Frankly this is a lot now I'm 64 but I'm determined to make a difference for women and breast cancer survivors and hope that the Standup for the Cure approach will help raise awareness and educate younger people about the importance of early detection and what to do if they have no health insurance. Let us know your ideas on how we can make the difference in this important fight against breast cancer. Mahalo! Judie
